Event Description:
President Johnson led our nation through some of the most significant and tumultuous times in our nation's history. To consider the importance of this history, we are hosting a program titled Reflections of the 60's. This event will focus on the 1960s and how LBJ affected the course of events then and how his presidency is relevant now. This educational event will incorporate a variety of educational activities which will capture the significance of this pivotal time in our nation's history. Reflections of the 60's will be held in view of the historic Texas White House at the LBJ Ranch, where many of the national decisions that shaped America today were made. The event will include sessions focusing on significant elements of the changes of the 1960s by authors, educators and leaders. Although we are presently developing the speaker schedule, past speakers have included Nick Kotz, author of Judgment Days, the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning book on the relationship between LBJ and Dr. Martin Luther King, and noted historian Douglas Brinkley, whose 2009 book Wilderness Warrior on President Theodore Roosevelt has received much acclaim. Other sessions on Vietnam and other subjects are being scheduled as well. The event will also include 1960s music and a 1960s Classic Car Show. Each speaker will be given about 30-45 minutes to speak and then answer questions from the audience. Those who have books will be able to sign copies for the visitors. Books will be available through Western National Parks Association at the Author Signing and Book Sales tent.
