Fredericksburg lies in the very center of the Texas Hill Country, a geographic area
that spans all
or parts of 15 counties in central Texas and encompassing roughly 10,000 square
miles. This
historic town, settled by Germans in 1846, is roughly 70 miles west of Austin, the
state capital,
and approximately 65 miles northwest of San Antonio, home to the legendary Alamo.
The cities
of Austin, San Antonio and Fredericksburg form an almost perfect triangle in the
heart of Texas.
Major transcontinental highways that provide easy access to Fredericksburg include
IH 10 (Jacksonville, Florida to Los Angeles, California) --- we are just 22 miles
off of this route ---
and IH 35 (Duluth, Minnesota to Laredo, Texas). Access to Fredericksburg from IH
35 is via
Austin or San Antonio, both located on IH 35.
Free Fredericksburg, Gillespie County and Hill Country maps are available at
the Fredericksburg Visitor Information Center, located at 302 East Austin Street
