Austin
Austin, the state Capital, is 1 hour and 15 minutes east of Fredericksburg. Visit the State Capitol, the LBJ Presidential Library, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Sixth Street and more.
San Antonio
One hour south of Fredericksburg is San Antonio, home to the famed Alamo, the fascinating River Walk, the Institute of Texan Cultures, The Witte Museum, art museums, Sea World of Texas and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
Kerrville, Medina and Bandera
Visit the Museum of Western Art, the YO Ranch, Stonehenge II, headquarters of James Avery Craftsman & art galleries in the Kerrville area. In Medina check out the apple crop. Next, there’s Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of the World, where horse back riding and boot-scootin’ to country western music are the order of the day & night.
Comfort, Boerne, Sisterdale and Luckenbach
Shop for antiques in Comfort. See the Treue der Union Monument, dedicated to the men who died for their beliefs in the Battle of the Nueces in 1862. Take a tour & tasting at an area winery. Boerne offers art galleries, dining and unique shopping in its historic district. Take 1376 to Sisterdale and stop for wine tasting at the local winery or for a “cold one” at Luckenbach, where “Everybody’s Somebody!”
Mason, Llano and Buchanan Lake
Take Highway 87 N. to Mason, home to historic Fort Mason and the 1928 Odeon Theatre. Topaz, the state gem, is found only in Mason County. Head east to Llano, known for its historic courthouse, barbecue restaurants, deer hunting and the Llano River. From Llano it is a short drive to Lake Buchanan, covering over 23,000 acres. A thriving colony of bald eagles lives on the upper reaches of the lakeshore during the winter months. And don’t miss Fall Creek Vineyard.
Stonewall, Johnson City and Blanco
East on Highway 290 you will find Stonewall, as well as the LBJ Ranch. Stonewall is famous for its peach crops and the annual June Peach JAMboree. In Johnson City, stop at LBJ National Historical Park or the Exotic Zoo, the Captain Perry Texas Ranger Museum and area vineyards. In Blanco, check out the shops on the town square and see the lovely old courthouse. Blanco State Park is the place for picnics, fishing, swimming and tubing. Take County Road 1623 for a scenic drive. |
